Holmes Grove United Methodist Church has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1874. The land for the church was graciously deeded to four trustees by William A. Sharpe, reflecting a need for a stable and safe place for African Americans to worship after the Emancipation Proclamation. Initially built near the community known as “colored town,” the church grew from humble beginnings, including a one-room schoolhouse where community leader Connie Mebane taught.

From 1874 to 1958, Holmes Grove was part of the African Methodist Episcopal denomination and shared ministry with nearby churches. Notable events included the annual "Big Meeting," a gathering that fostered community and spiritual renewal.

In 1968, the church joined the Western North Carolina Conference as a United Methodist Church. Under Rev. John A. Gray, plans for a new church began, leading to the groundbreaking for the Fellowship Hall in 1974. By November of that year, the church celebrated its 100th anniversary.

The congregation continued to grow, culminating in the consecration of a new sanctuary on May 7, 1995. Over the years, the church has seen various pastors, each contributing to its mission and community outreach.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Holmes Grove adapted by utilizing remote technologies for worship and maintaining community engagement through initiatives like food drives and health programs. The church’s commitment to education and outreach has remained strong.

As part of its 150th anniversary celebrations, the church is created a commemorative quilt and a time capsule buried on the church grounds for the next generation, 100 years from now.

Recognized as a “Lighthouse Church,” Holmes Grove continues to embrace its legacy and mission to support the community in the spirit of unity and love. With the theme "We are Family: Honoring the Past and Embracing the Future," Holmes Grove United Methodist Church looks forward to the next chapter in its storied history.
