Pastor's Letter

Greetings Holmes Grove Church,                                                                                                                                  May, 2024
Grace, peace, and blessings to you. I thank God that I have been reappointed to Holmes Grove for another year. As you know, clergy are appointed year-by-year by the district superintendent and the bishop, who work closely to match clergy with congregations, considering the church profile, and the Staff-Parish Relations Committee.

Thank you for your participation in the HBCU Health Education Data Collection by completing the COVID-19 Survey via the QR code. In addition thanks to those of who attended the virtual and/or in-person distribution Conference at Winston-Salem State University. We have received an honorarium for congregational care.

The Ascension of Christ is on Thursday May 9 (40-days after the Resurrection). This month we celebrate Mother’s Day on Sunday May 12, 2024. Pentecost, the birth of the church is on Sunday May 19, 2024 (50 days after the resurrection), and Trinity Sunday is on May 26, 2024. Also, in the month of May and June, we will celebrate those graduating with the Class of 2024.

The delayed General Conference of the UMC 2020 was held in Charlotte, NC, from Tuesday April 23-May 3, 2024. Very important decisions were made regarding our denomination, in which I will keep you informed. As a Lighthouse Church, we provide a safe space, offering hope and peace for those who are in transition from their disaffiliated churches. I will be attending the Black Clergy Retreat from May 20-24, 2024, in Myrtle Beach, SC, as well as the Western North Carolina Annual Conference of the UMC will be held on June 20-23, 2024, at Lake Junaluska, NC.

We have many things happening here at Holmes Grove Church. The United Women of Faith hosted a marvelous Rainbow Tea and Fashion Show on April 27, 2024, led by my wife, Carissa Graves-Henry and Secretary Natasha Vann. We are looking forward to our Vacation Bible School, which will be held on June 18-20, 2024. In addition, plans are underway for our 150th Church Anniversary, in which the banquet will take place on November 9, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. at the Barber Park Event Center. We will begin planning our annual revival, which takes place during the first week of August.

Please continue to invite people to attend our worship services, our bi-weekly Chair Yoga Tuesday’s, our weekly Wednesday night Bible Study via Zoom, and our 4th Sunday Children’s Church. Let’s continue our mission: To Make Disciples of Jesus Christ for the Transformation of the World, and Vision: “To be an Intergenerational Church that loves serving the Lord together.”
Be Blessed,
Rev. Dr. John P. Henry, Jr.
